TASTING NOTES
I don’t think I have ever tried a blend of Riesling and Chenin Blanc before, so stepping into unknown territory. Winemaker Darren Burke’s main gig is at Leura Park with Bromley the side project. The fruit for this comes off a single vineyard on the Bellarine Peninsula, and was largely fermented in a single terracotta egg, so minuscule production. It is a fascinating wine that is gently aromatic with pear and apple fruit aromas plus a touch of lanolin too.
It is not strongly varietal but it’s not made to be as this is more in the French tradition of regional blends that showcase their local conditions. The palate is then bright and vibrant – reserved florals and citrus are underpinned by chalky Chenin Blanc acidity. The finish is a little pinched but overall it is a unique wine that does not disappoint, especially for the price.
