Chenin Blanc is the chameleon of the white wine world. There are 4 common styles of Chenin Blanc; sparkling (both dry and sweet), off-dry/demi-sec, light and fruity, and full-bodied. Chenin Blanc can make wine on such a wide spectrum because of its very high acidity, which is necessary in the production of quality sparkling wine as well as a major factor in balancing out sweetness in sweet or dessert wines.
Chenin Blanc originated in the Loire Valley in France, where it is used to make the region’s highly regarded Vouvray sparkling. However, the majority of the world’s Chenin Blanc grows in South Africa where the grape is known as “steen”. Old World Chenin is hailed as being zingy and refreshing while New World Chenins are typically more full-bodied with notes of peach, honeydew and guava.
